Sineu – haven of peace in the interior of the island

The town of Sineu is the geographical center of the beautiful island of Mallorca and is home to almost 4,000 inhabitants. The capital Palma can be reached from here in about 40 minutes by car. After the expulsion of the Arabs from the island in the early 13th century, the island’s lands were divided between the Crown of Aragon and the Crown of Catalonia. In 1300, the city of Sineu received the title of “Pueblo Real” (Royal City) because the kings of the Crown of Aragon established their residence there.

Weekly market

Along with the markets of Santa María del Camí and Alcudia, the Sineu market is one of the most important weekly markets on Mallorca and the main attraction of Sineu. The market is said to have existed for over 700 years, making it one of the oldest on Mallorca. At the weekly market, which takes place every Wednesday, you will find vegetables, herbs, preserves; handicrafts, decorative items, natural soaps and perfumes; typical Mallorcan sausages such as sobrasada or butifarrón and even Menorcan products such as the excellent Mahón cheese. Gastronomy

Sineu offers you a wide gastronomic offer. There are now more than 40 restaurants and hotels with two, three and four stars. The so-called “cellers”, old wine cellars, are the perfect place to try traditional recipes from Mallorcan cuisine.

One of the recipes Sineu is known for is Frito Mallorquin. One of Mallorca’s star dishes, tastefully served in this town. Frito Mallorquin is usually prepared with lamb offal and vegetables. Traditionally, this purely Mallorcan dish was prepared at Easter, on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, or to use the meat after the “matanzas” (slaughter) in winter. Nowadays you can enjoy it in every season.

Festivals and traditions

Sineu is one of the spring fair capitals and has the largest number of visitors. The “Sa Fira de Sineu” is one of the oldest festivals on Mallorca.

On August 15th, Sineu celebrates the feast of its patron saint “Mare de Deu d’Agost” with games, music, street parties and fireworks. It is a typical summer festival.
