Cales de Mallorca

Cales de Mallorca is an excellent place to relax and have fun. This, especially in the summer months, very busy place is characterised by its unique location. It is located on a formation of limestone rocks surrounded by a multitude of caves.

This wealth of caves in Cales de Mallorca is indeed unique. No other area of the Balearic Island has as many caves as this one. And of course, the interplay of rock formations, coastal stretches and cave areas offers perfect conditions for extensive sunbathing in pictural bays.

Location and surroundings

The village belongs to the municipality of Manacor. The island capital Palma de Mallorca can be reached from here in about one hour by car. Direct neighbours here on the east coast are the two villages of Porto Cristo and Portocolom. Cales de Mallorca is perfect for families in particular. The combination of beautiful natural scenery and a lively village centre offers a wide range of activities.

The village

Cales de Mallorca was built entirely on limestone cliffs, with three beautiful bays connecting it to the sea. These are also the origin of the name Cales/Calas de Mallorca, meaning “the bays of Mallorca”.

The centre of the village offers a recommendable gastronomic offer, shopping possibilities, bars and various leisure activities. There is a lot of activity here during the summer months. Those who appreciate privacy and feel most at home in nature can quickly reach the lush green coastal area on foot.

The high season usually starts in April and ends in October. The rest of the year, most of the local shops and hotels are closed, then Cales de Mallorca impresses especially with its natural surroundings. Various hiking routes take you along the beautiful, partly sculptured limestone rocky coastline all the way to the interior.

Beaches

The largest beach in Cales de Mallorca is “Cala Domingos”, above white sand and crystal-clear water a wonderful view to the Mediterranean Sea opens up between the limestone rocks. A large promenade connects this beach with the two other bays of Cala Romeguera and Cala Antena. Due to the numerous caves, not only diving but also snorkelling becomes a true voyage of discovery, as a large part of the caves in the area has not been explored yet.

If you prefer peace and quiet on the beach instead of good service, we recommend the bay of Cala Bota north of the village. It is one of many small hidden bays that can be discovered in the natural forest areas away from the centre of the village.

Activities

Above all, discover the wonderful underwater world of Cales de Mallorca. A popular activity is, for example, the glass-bottom boat on site. Various providers navigate along the coastline several times a day, presenting everything beneath the shiny surface of the Mediterranean Sea, without getting wet. The highlight of the cave-rich village is the approx. 800 m long pirate’s cave “Coves de Pirata” with underground salt lakes, which is located right next to the Cala Falco.

Living in Cales de Mallorca
