Mallorca is not one of the classic surf spots, like beaches in France or Portugal. However, the Spanish island is steadily gaining popularity among surf fans and is more and more becoming a real alternative.
There are about 40 popular surf spots all over the island, most of them on the southwest and northeast coast of Mallorca. Whether windsurfers, waveriders or kitesurfers, you can find something for everyone here.
On Mallorca, especially in winter, the wind is strong and the number of days suitable for surfing is higher than average. The Mediterranean Sea around Mallorca has a clear advantage in comparison to the Atlantic: even in winter, the sea temperature does not drop below approx. 13 degrees.
The waves on Mallorca are quite mild, so they are ideally suited for beginners or surfers who haven’t surfed for a long time. But advanced surfers also get their money’s worth with a bit of luck.
The most popular surf spots on Mallorca
Cala Mesquida and surroundings
The bays of Cala Mesquida, Cala Torta and Cala Mitjana are considered as the best spots for surfing. Stronger and higher waves can appear here from time to time due to the stronger winds.
Colònia de Sant Pere
At the eastern end of the bay of Alcúdia, inexperienced beginners will find shallow waves, deep water and a beginner-friendly environment with few rocks in Colònia de Sant Pere.
Son Serra de Marina
Son Serra de Marina beach, between Artà and Can Picafort, is also recommended for surfing beginners. This beach is a peaceful spot on the otherwise very popular and well-visited bay of Alcúdia. Here the wind is rather mild and even in high season the beach is not too crowded.
Es Barcarés beach
This beach on the north-east coast of the island is located on the eastern arm of the Bay of Pollenҫa and is considered as an ideal windsurfing spot. With a bit of luck, surfers can catch a strong breeze here.
