Located in the east of the island Mallorca is the town of Porto Cristo. This is the Llevant region only about 15 km from the island’s second largest city (Manacor). The once small fishing village, also known as “Es Port” or “Port de Manacor”, has developed into an attractive coastal resort for tourists and locals alike. Right next to the well-known holiday resorts of Cala Mandia and Cala Millor, Porto Cristo captivates with its historic old town centre and the wonderful mediterranean fishing and yacht harbour.
A culinary experience
The gastronomic offer on the harbour promenade is extremely extensive. On of the first restaurant you should visit is the Flamingo. The restaurant is located directly on the steep waterfront and rewards its visitors not only with a delicious paella, but also with a breathtaking view. Other cosy bars and recommendable restaurants can be found along the promenade, which stretches all the way around the harbour to the Club Nautico.
For breakfast, the Mallorcans like to go to the typical, long-established bars. A so-called “librito” (baguette with ham and cheese, shortly fried on the grill) is recommended … and of course the homemade alioli should not be missing.
Caves and water sports
After a substantial breakfast, you can plan your day with various activities. For example, a visit to the world-famous dragon caves “Cuevas del Drach” is worthwhile. The absolute highlight here is the small concert and the final boat trip across Europe’s largest underground lake.
A snorkelling or diving excursion is indispensable in a coastal town like Porto Cristo. Local diving schools will guide you to the numerous spectacular caves hidden in and under the rocks along the coast.
Dreamlike surroundings in Porto Cristo
For those who do not know, the stretches of coast south of Porto Cristo are ideal for excursions and longer hikes. Advantage here: The sea and the fresh, salty breeze are your constant companions. Picturesque bays with turquoise-blue sea invite you to have a picnic with a fantastic view or even a little refreshment. Discover Cala Varques, once an insider tip and now well known, Cala Magraner or Cala Sequer.
Among the locals and the adventurous, the rocky cove of Cala Murta (in Porto Cristo) is very popular. With a bit of luck, you can enjoy the romantic loneliness here while bathing in dreamlike crystal-clear water with an subterranean sweet water spring.
The next bathing bay with a sandy beach behind Cala Murta is Cala Anguila, about 2 km from Porto Cristo, as well as the sister bay beside it “Cala Mandia”, in both of them you can walk up to 30 m into the shallow turquoise-blue sea.
Let yourself be enchanted by the splendour and charm of this town, because it is, in short: P for PICTURESQUE & C for CHARISMATIC!
